Re: Metonic Cycle

Karl Palmen - UKRI STFC

Dear Aristeo and Calendar People

I think Aristeo means

Year Of Metonic Cycle = Remainder( Jewish year/19) + 1

This is not correct.

Year Of Metonic Cycle = Remainder( (Jewish year – 1)/19 ) + 1

is correct. For the first Metonic cycle, this is simply equal to the Jewish year, which is why this scheme is chosen.

Each Metonic cycle ends with a year divisible by 19. This last year  has a remainder of 18 to which 1 is added, so give 19, which is a leap year. Next year gives a remainder of 0 to which 1 is added, so is the first year of the next Metonic cycle.

The - 1 and + 1 appear in the expression only to ensure that the last year of the Metonic cycle is 19 rather than 0 and not to affect any other year.

This year 5778 gives Remainder(5777/19) + 1 = 1 + 1 = 2 so is the 2nd year of the Metonic cycle. 5776 = 19*304 so was the last year of the previous Metonic cycle.

Dear Calendar People,

I understand that to get which Metonic Cycle to use in a given Jewish year:

Metonic Cycle = Jewish year/19 + 1

One is added to the remainder.

I was referring to the Hebrew year 5776 which began in 2015 and ended in 2016 My prior statement appears to have been off a year

Aristeo Fernando-3
Why is it that it is it Feast of Tabernacles already which is six months away (John 7:2) when it is the Passover Festival (John 6:4)?

Re: Metonic Cycle

Aristeo Fernando-3
Dear Calendar People,

It is correct - the Feast of Tabernacles (John 7:2) follows the Passover Festival (John 6:4).   It is the second of the three-year ministry of Jesus.  The third and final life of Jesus is in John 12:1.
